Medieval artists created pictures showing that Jews had sexual contact with pigs, drank the blood of abducted Christian children, were in league with the devil, had horns, etc. They used their artwork to depict hate-provoking, blood curdling images of such scenes.

Once believed as literal truth, these inflammatory depictions can now be found, disguised as metaphors, in current political cartoons. These hate-laden images form an arsenal of what can be called "Secret Codes".

Dehumanization codes are a broad family of images which transmit the belief that Jews are not human beings. There are two sub-families within the Dehumanizing Family of codes.

1. The Zoomorphic codes which portrays Jews as animals. This sub-family includes the codes for: snake, spider, dog, pig, octopus, vermin

2. The Demonization codes which portray Jews as demonic beings. This sub-family includes the codes for: claws, horns, demons and blood-drinkers

The Zoomorphing codes are a sub-family of the Dehumanization family of codes in which Jews are portrayed as animals.

The Demonization codes are a sub-family of the Dehumanization family of codes in which Jews are portrayed as clawed demons, horned devils, cannibals, and blood sucking vampires.

Codes include demons, baby eaters, claws, devouring mouths, and blood drinkers

The Nazi Holocaust and the contemporary targeting of Jews and Jewish Institutions by terrorist organizations are an impediment to the portrayal of the Jew as the powerful “devil” used as a unifying force needed by mass movements in their quests for power. Memetically, Antisemitism and the Antisemitic image-codes needed to evolve into a form which would deny Jewish victimhood. Moral Inversion Codes depict the victims as the perpetrators. Thus the Jew becomes the Nazi or the terrorist suicide bomber, rather than their target and victim!

In our collection we define the "modern period" as being Post-Holocaust.These paintings, woodcuts, etc. are from the pre-modern period.
These examples of early uses of the Secret Codes will be useful in investigating the sources of the contemporary codes.
