These codes are used in two ways:
1. In the Western press
in anti-Israel cartoons (with no conscious intent to defame).
2. In the Enemy press
with conscious intent to defame (as in contemporary Iranian, Neo Nazi, Arab, and Islamist work)
1. Political cartoons in western democracies: The use of historic antisemitic “codes” in western political cartoons is an indication of the infection of the offending cartoonist. He may be no more responsible for his compulsive use of these viral images than a person with a tuberculosis infection can keep from coughing.
Logical arguments and engaging the cartoonist in public debate is useless! The offending “Western” cartoonist is usually “infected” rather than “antisemitic”. And his work can be shown to be “contaminated”.
Only the exposure of historic antisemitic codes in his work and their meanings can resolve the issue. One method of curing an infection is to expose it to the light and to identify its means of contagion. That, in short, is the purpose of our work.
2. Political cartoons by antisemitic regimes and mass movements:
The current flood of Arab, Iranian, Islamist and Neo Nazi cartoons consciously use these codes. Theirs is a purposeful intent to infect. Their aim is to establish the belief that Jews and Judaism are evil and demonic and to present themselves as the “cure”.
As Eric Hoffer noted in his book The True Believer – Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements
“Mass movements can rise and spread without belief in a God, but never without belief in a devil”. Hoffer also wrote; “the technique of a mass movement aims to infect people with a malady and then offer the movement as a cure.“
